"15 Critical Electrical Exam Tips You Need to Know to Pass Your Exam"

1. MAKE FLASH CARDS Of THE ARTICLES AND TABLES(A complete set of over 160 preprinted cards is included with our Workshop). .

Make flash cards On the front of each card write the article number. On the back of the card write the heading for the article. For example: on the back of the card for article 300 you will write “Wiring Methods”. You’ll do this until all of the cards have titles written on them. Go over these every chance you get. Keep going over them until you can recognize 80% of these articles without looking at the backs.

2. HIGHLIGHT YOUR CODE BOOK.

Highlight your codebook in this manner. Hightlight the PARTS (I, II, III, etc.) in Orange. Highlight the SECTIONS in yellow. This will help your eyes distinguish between the two faster. Your brain is a filing cabinet that requires separation and organization of material.

Get to know the CHAPTER’S basic content. Example: Chapter 4 deals with things we USE every day. Go through the Table of Contents and read it once every day or every week, depending on how soon your test is coming up.

3. DO NOT WRITE NOTES IN YOUR CODE BOOK!

The proctor will require you to scribble out all of your notes and remove hand written note pages.

4. TAB YOUR CODE BOOK.

Get a set of tabs for your codebook. Mike Holt's site at HTTP://www.NECcode.com has them, as do many other sites. Do NOT add hand made tabs with writing on them! Proctors might ask you to remove those as well. Get to know your tabs very well! They will save you a lot of time, but knowing the ARTICLES by heart will give you the greatest advantage.

5. USE THE NEC EXPANDED TABLE OF CONTENTS or read through each SECTION TITLE.(E.T.C. is FREE when you attend the Workshop)

There is no faster way to file key words in your brain. Read through it (or the SECTIONS) often. Here, again, the table will help you see how the Code book is organized. You’ll begin to see repetition throughout the chapters. It’s easier for your brain to retain a smaller, more notable amount of BASIC information than reading through sentence after sentence and trying to retain all you’ve read. The codebook is not memorable or interesting reading.

6. READ THE ANSWERS!

Make sure you read not only the question carefully, but ALL of the answers as well. Lots of test-takers, in an effort to save time, will choose the answer first answer that looks right. Big mistake!

7. LOOK UP THE ANSWER TO EVERY QUESTION.

Don't trust yourself. Many exam-takers BELIEVE they know the answer and come out of the exam thinking they did well, only to find out they failed. It's quite a shock, but it happens a lot! If you retake your exam without correcting this, you could fail again!

8. RELATE YOUR DAILY EXPERIENCE TO THE CODE BOOK.

It's a great idea to make a daily journal of what you did all day and record it in a journel of experience. It's also a great reference tool for your resume, or for when you go for an interview and you're asked what it is you've done as an electrician (apprentices, especially).

9. GET MATERIALS THAT EXPLAIN THE CODEBOOK.

There's a wealth of information available on-line and at many book stores that can explain clearly what the codebook means by using graphics, pictures, videos and textbooks. In the future, this site will be one of them as we expand our capabilities.

10. GET PRACTICE EXAMS.

Practice exams are great, but having a method to look up answers in 1 minute or less is what you'll need even more. Yeah, we've got that. Try our WORKSHOP. It's a proven method anyone can learn even if you've never touched a codebook!
