Take a look at the two charts below.

Think about a file folder in your home that contains your name, address and phone number. Now picture yourself far above the earth out in space. As you look down on earth you’ll see the continent you live on, then zoom in on the state, then the city, then the street, the building, the room, the file cabinet, the drawer, the section of the drawer, your file, and, finally, the page with your information on it. You’ll notice here that I’ve drawn parallels to demonstrate how you can organize the codebook in the same hierarchical manor. Relating the codebook this way will help you “zoom in” on what you’re looking for.

Learning basically HOW the codebook is organized will streamline your ability to find information quickly! It’s just that simple! The difficult part comes in running familiar neuro-pathways so that your brain cuts out the work of thinking. You’ll want to train your file-finding brain so that it immediately KNOWS where to get what you’re looking for in a split second. The way to do that is by either memorization or association and possibly a combination of both. You’ll agree that memorizing your basic math functions of adding, subtracting , multiplication and division tables helps you quickly do calculations. The same principle applies here. If you know basically what’s in a CHAPTER and then learn basically what’s in each major ARTICLE, the rest is much easier to find and does NOT have to be committed to memory!

It’s easy to remember that there are 9 chapters in the codebook. These 9 chapter can be related as follows:

Chapter 1 – Generally applying conditions

Chapter 2 – Neutrals, Services, Branch Circuits, Protection, Grounding, Surge stuff.

Chapter 3 – Ways to wire (Wiring Methods & Materials) and things to put wires in (Raceways).

Chapter 4 – Cords, Fixtures, appliances and stuff we use every day.

Chapter 5 – Scary places and conditions. Things that can cause an explosion , fire or chaos to irrupt.

Chapter 6 – Weird things outside of normal use like cranes and dumbwaiters.

Chapter 7 – Think Emergency stuff like backup power, fire alarm, Fiber optic.

Chapter 8 – Things that has to do with COMMUNICATIONS systems like antennas, TV, radio, networks.

Chapter 9 – Table, tables, tables, and annexes
